He studied chemistry at the University of Göttingen. He completed his Master thesis in organic chemistry—focusing on natural products derived from fungi—under the supervision of Axel Zeeck. He subsequently received his PhD in Chemistry in 2000 from the same Institute.
After obtaining his doctorate, Bode remained in Axel Zeeck's laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher before moving to the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig to conduct research on myxobacteria under Rolf Müller. He continued his work with Rolf Müller supported by a DFG research fellowship. As part of this fellowship, Bode worked with Dale Kaiser at Stanford University from 2002 to 2003 before returning to Rolf Müller's group.
From 2004 to 2005, Helge Bode held the position of Junior Professor of Natural Product Biotechnology at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at Saarland University. Subsequently, he was a junior research group leader in the DFG’s Emmy Noether Programme at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at Goethe University Frankfurt till 2010. From 2008 to 2017, he held the Merck Endowed Professorship for Molecular Biotechnology. He has been a full professor of Molecular Biotechnology since 2018. In the autumn of 2020, Bode assumed the position of Director at the Max Planck Institute in Marburg. Since 2022, Bode has also served as Professor of Chemical Biology at Philipps University Marburg and as Goethe Research Professor of Molecular Biotechnology at Goethe University Frankfurt.
His research activity focuses on the understanding of microbial metabolite function in the environment using entomopathogenic nematodes and their associated bacteria as model systems. He additionally uses his knowledge of the underlying biosynthetic pathways to manipulate them in detail and even generate new-to-nature microbial metabolites.
On Monday, 5th of October Prof Bode will deliver a lecture entitled "Making peptides the non-ribosomal way:possibilities and limitations"
location: Room 15, Blocco Aule, Campus Sesto, Sesto Fiorentino
time: 12 pm
